IMMIGRATION CATEGORIES The main principles of the Canada Immigration Act are to enrich the cultural and social structures of the country; to enhance economic development; and to facilitate family reunion. The major categories of immigrants are independent applicants; business applicants (comprised of investors, entrepreneurs, and self-employed persons); family class applicants; and convention refugee applicants. Independent Immigrants This is the largest category of immigrants to Canada. As long as you have a university education in either China or other countries, one year of working experience, a good language ability in either English or French, and are between 21 and 44 years old, you are qualified to immigrate to Canada. Investors Starting from April 1, 1999, prospective investor immigrants must have successfully operated, controlled or directed a business or commercial undertaking and have accumulated, through their own endeavors, a personal net worth of at least $800,000 (Cdn.). The Immigration Regulations which govern the selection of investor immigrants require that investors make a minimum investment $400,000(Cdn) after applying for an immigrant visa. Entrepreneurs These immigrants are experienced business people who wish to buy or establish a business in which they will have an active managerial role. The business must create jobs for one or more Canadians and must make a significant contribution to our economy. This category includes business people who are experienced in managing small to medium-sized enterprises. Self-employed These immigrants have the intention and ability to establish or buy a business in Canada that creates employment for themselves. The business must contribute significantly to the economy, or the cultural or artistic life of Canada. This category includes farmers, sports personalities, artists, and owners of small business outlets which certain communities need. Family Class Canadian citizens and permanent residents are able to sponsor the applications of certain relatives under Family Class category. To qualify as a family class member, you must be related to your sponsor in one of the following ways: spouse, fiance (fiancee), dependent children, parents, grandparents, orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild under 19 years of age and unmarried.
